Structural Engineer - Historic Preservation (8-15 years)

Mid-Atlantic states structural engineering firm seeks an experienced preservation engineer. The selected individual will join a well-known firm that works on projects ranging from community churches to national historical sites. Workload will be a mixture of preservation projects and some modern facilities (e.g. additions). Occasional overnight travel will be necessary.
Position Description:
The engineer will be involved in the investigation of existing conditions and assessment of deterioration of timber, iron, steel, concrete, terra cotta, brick, stone and concrete masonry elements; calculation of load capacity of structural members in all those materials; researching emerging repair technologies or devices; design of structural reinforcements (splices, sistering, flitch plates, epoxy anchors, carbon-fiber mesh, etc.); developing repair or renovation details and specifications. The engineer will be responsible to see through projects from proposal to end of construction, under the direction of firm principals and associates. Some projects will require managing other engineers and staff. Good communication skills are essential for written and oral reporting to architects, facility owners / managers, and government officials.
