5. New Graduate – Unique Position
"Great things happen when you least expect it. A few years ago, I attended a SE Solutions seminar at my college, Penn State University. Honestly, the main reason I went to the seminar was because they were offering free pizza and extra credit for one of my courses. Little did I know that I was meeting my future recruiter, predecessor of my current career position, and good friend, Brian Quinn.
After the SE Solutions seminar, I took what Brian had said and put it on the back burner. At this point, I already had an internship set up with a consulting firm in Miami, Fl. I thought I was ahead of the game and on my way to become a structural engineer. After working for the consulting firm for two summers and completing my course work at Penn State, I knew that typical engineering was not my road to success. The work week became such a dread that I even started to rethink my educational choice.
Four months before graduation, I was offered a full time position at the same consulting firm. It was at this point that I needed to make one of the biggest decisions of my life. Take what I had or take the risk of being unemployed and hopefully find a career that fit my personality. I chose option B.
With only weeks before graduation, I still had no job and no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Going through business cards that I collected over the years, I came across the SE Solutions card. I instantaneously remembered that Brian Quinn said he can help engineers find careers that they love. Of course I was skeptical, but I figured it couldn’t hurt to contact him since I didn’t have a job anyway.
After speaking with Brian and Lisa on the phone, they evaluated my needs. They were not just trying to plug me into a position so that I would get a job and they could move on to the next client. They wanted to find me a job that would give me the freedom, flexibility, location, and social interaction that I desired.
Within two weeks of speaking with Brian Quinn, I was on an airplane flying to Chicago and Tennessee for two different interviews with two different companies. By the end of the month, I landed a job that I didn’t even know existed. I am now in a position where I am traveling all over the country and working my own hours.
After working a few months at my current job, I can see firsthand how Brian has made his impact on the structural engineering industry. Due to my current job position, I have met with dozens of structural engineers that have had the same privilege as me of meeting Mr. Quinn. To this day, I’ve heard nothing but great things about Brian. He is very well respected within the industry and really has dedicated a significant portion of his life to make sure his clients are truly happy.
Not only did Brian help get me the job that I dreamed about, but he also guided me through the process and reassured me of my decisions. I still speak with Brian on a regular basis and fully intend on maintaining our friendship. It’s funny how things work out - If I never contacted SE Solutions then I can almost guarantee that I would not be in the position that I am in today. Brian and Lisa are amongst the few honest, dedicated, and friendly people left in this world that will do whatever they can to help a person out."
